HEY THERE GUYS, IT IS TIME FOR POST 5 IN MY COFFEE, TEA & CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS, AND I AM SO HAPPY TO HAVE KATHLEEN KERRIDGE AS THE FEATURED AUTHOR TODAY! We're not a family big on traditions, but
at Christmas even we have a few. We wake up early. Like, are there really two
of these hours in one day? kind of early. Breakfast is always, without fail, a
Full English—which for the Americans reading, means smoked back bacon (not
streaky rashers), with sausages, black pudding, fried mushrooms, fried
tomatoes, and a couple of fried eggs…as well as toast, fried bread, baked beans
and gallons of tea and coffee, because we were up stupidly early!
After we've eaten so much we think we might
pop—or poop—at the table, we gather around the tree where my husband, being the
oldest in the house, starts to hand out the gifts. We do it one by one, not moving onto the next
before we've opened the one before. Drawing it out seems to make it last
longer, after all! It's great to watch the faces of each recipient as they tear
into presents, and I know the hubs loves to play the role of Santa, for all he
might be an atheist.
Family will come round, or we will walk to
wherever family happens to be cooking Christmas dinner that year (usually it's
me, but this year I have a year off—yay!).
It's the one day of the year, when food isn't rationed and when figures
aren't watched. When drink flows freely, sweets appear from nowhere, and games
are played and fought over. We're a rowdy bunch, with evil humour and dirty
minds, so when we all gather for Christmas we've made it a tradition to take
Eat, Drink & Be Merry as our mantra, and spread goodwill to each other as
much as we can.

Kathleen Kerridge was born in the late seventies and raised by a single mother, on a council estate and learnt early in life to seek and explore different methods of escapism.
She found herself immersed in books from a very young age. By the age of ten, having exhausted the local library, her home, and her school of their children’s books, Kathleen had moved onto the more adult themes…and consequently has a fear of storm drains, clowns, hotel corridors, rats, being left alone (in case everyone else has been stolen by aliens…); well, you get the idea.
There is a reason why ten-year-old children should not read the entire bibliography of James Herbert and Stephen King.
But, this meant that Kathleen’s love of reading escalated. To find books could hold such power between their covers fed and nourished her. The small two page stories she had been content to write in an evening started to become something more. She explored and played with styles and genres and subsequently found out, very early on, that she did not want to write about ‘The Real’. There was enough real – Kathleen wanted fantasy. She wanted other worlds, and magic.
Getting pregnant at fifteen could have scuppered all Kathleen’s dreams and squashed her fantasies. Money had to be earned, after all, and a daughter was followed quickly by a son and two more daughters. Marriage happened, somewhere along the path, and family life, combined with work, left Kathleen with little time to chase rainbows.
A heart attack aged 29, following a partial mastectomy after six operations to cut out the bad stuff, before it went very wrong, made Kathleen take stock. It made her live in her head and go back to her fail-safe method of escape, except this time…
This time, her stories spoke back. No longer were they short ‘magazine length’ pieces. No longer could she scribble down a poem and be satisfied that she had got the words out. This time, Kathleen’s stories came as a world of people, each as individual as everyone in the real world. Kathleen found herself seeing their lives and acting as a medium to tell their tale. The ‘why’ and the ‘how’ began to demand to be answered, and suddenly she knew she could never work again.
Now, when she is not at her desk creating worlds, heroes and villains, Kathleen can be found ‘working’ in coffee shops and on beaches. The great thing about creating words and stories, is that they only need an imagination and a pen, both of which are pretty mobile. She is an active supporter of human rights and a great believer that all people deserve equality, the right to free speech and, most importantly, the right to love who they choose.
