Excerpt:

When it gets dark, he texts Brian that he's going to be out late, and avails himself of not one but three vampire-human nightclubs set along a dense strip of Chicago nightlife. Going alone to places like this always attracts immediate attention, and he isn't surprised when he has to pry both humans and vampires off of himself. But he doesn't mind—the blood from the center is humming in his veins, and that buzz takes on a new dimension every time that he swallows a thimbleful of blood from a donor, which he does at least a dozen times over the course of the evening. When he’s more relaxed, he allows bodies against his own, dancing with strangers until strobe lights become normal and everything outside is too dim and still.

The blood changes the world around him. Every color, every sound and every source of light takes on a life of its own.

He loses track of how many donors he pays. All he knows is he's spent all of the pocket money that Brian gave him for the weekend.

He feels like a bloated tick. He’s been away too long. Brian. He has to get back to Brian.

LOOKS GREAT RIGHT? GRAB YOUR COPY TODAY! HERE IS A Q&A WITH MELISSA I KNOW YOU WILL ENJOY!

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Melissa Graves author of Tainted Heart

Hi Melissa, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

  1. Tell us something about your character’s friends.

Brian tends to gravitate toward friends who more closely resemble family, because his upbringing was cold and he’s been looking for ways to fill those gaps since he left home.  For example, his relationship with Erica, the woman who was his boss at the blood distribution center, morphed into her family practically adopting him.  Kyle tends to latch on to friends who resemble mentors, because even though he also had a detached upbringing, he mistrusts the idea of family—so he subconsciously searches for guidance instead.  His relationship with Elisa—how eager he is to learn from and shadow her—speaks to that.

  1. What is your character’s favorite meal? Favorite dessert? Favorite snack food?

Kyle’s favorite meal is Brian—so I should probably talk about Brian’s favorite foods instead!  Brian is a huge foodie, but he almost never has time to eat a sit down meal.  Coffee and protein bars are the mainstay of his daytime diet, but he’s also big on food trucks of any kind.  He loves Japanese and Korean food, but also harbors an affinity for more stick-to-your-ribs fare such as German.  He’s big into popcorn for a snack, and any kind of pudding for dessert.

  1. What activity does your character absolutely hate?

Kyle hates paperwork with a passion—which is an issue, since he does a lot of it between the blood club, facility, and school.  His attention span definitely requires some endurance training.  Brian hates having to deliver bad news to his patients and their families.  He feels confident in his ability to maintain a good bedside manner, but when the prognosis is negative, he feels as if his dread and sadness always shines through.

  1. What other author’s book do you think your character would be good in?

I can’t imagine these guys thriving in a harsher vampire/human world—they’re tough, but not that tough!  Thinking about them thrown in with the Sookie Stackhouse vampires is amusing; Kyle and Brian both would be scandalized (though privately titillated), and would laugh if you told them that werewolves, shapeshifters, and faeries existed.  Everyone knows those things are just fiction!

  1. What’s your favorite decade and why?

If we’re speaking generally, I’ll have to default to my childhood and say the ‘90’s…it was fun to be a kid in the ‘90’s!  If we’re taking music and culture more into account, I’d have to say the ‘70’s or ‘80’s.  The shift in liberal culture and the general “sound” of the generational change was so loud and colorful and amazing.  Also, as a queer woman, I think it would have been both devastating and humbling to have experienced the AIDs crisis.
