I LOVE THIS QUOTE FOR THIS BOOK, AS IT IS ALL ABOUT STARTING OVER: HERE IS MY REVIEW:

The Opera House by: Hans M. Hirschi
                                                                reviewed by: Becky

The Ultimate Loss

Raphael doesn’t believe in a higher power, or in anything, for that matter. After the death of his son, his life shattered, Raphael regrets that he didn’t lie about some perfect paradise, and he pushes away everything that once mattered to him—his lover, his job, his reputation as a top architect. Then he meets Brian, a homeless, maybe hopeless kid.

A Second Chance

Brian’s a street kid. When he disappears, Raphael realizes that he cannot fail another person, and he launches a full-out search. What he finds both breaks his heart and begins to heal it.

A Little Magic

The price of saving Brian is high, maybe too high. But Raphael is no stranger to sacrifice, and he’ll risk everything to save Brian and reunite with the man Raphael now loves. The question is—How? Like the architecture of the opera house Raphael designs, the steps to regaining his life will depend not just on careful planning, but faith, hope, and maybe just the magic of love.

I debated on how to start this review, but I have decided to start with this: It takes an author with a good amount of heart and compassion to take a character who has lost it all and make them want to live again. To do that and be successful at it is almost impossible, yet Hans Hirschi has done just that, and done it astoundingly well!

Rafael has lost his son and his will to go on, why live life without Jason in it, though no matter how hard Rafael will it not to, life goes on. This man will face his hardest challenge in rebuilding his life and trying to help a teenager who has seen the seedy side of life and deserves so much better.

We get a first hand look at the desperation and guilt that weighs down Rafael and makes him not care what he loses, but when he vows to help Brian, he begins to want to live and love again.

What follows is a journey, the journey of a man who strives to get his life back on track and of a boy whose happiness, if not life depend on it! Rafael will struggle to save Brian, all the while working on his broken spirit, and when the opportunity arises to fall in love again, will he be strong enough in spirit to take the plunge?

Do not miss this epic read friends, though it is sad in parts, it is in whole a story of survival and learning to live again after a tremendous loss. You will be so glad you read it! Thank you Hans, for the amount of heart and soul you put into this amazing work!

NOW FOR A SMALL EXCERPT:

By the time Raphael reached Jason’s grave, his mood was somber, but not so much with his usual grief for Jason. He was angry about the fate that put Brian on the streets, the way he had treated the kid, the loss of his car, all the valuables and mementos he had lost with it. And he was angry about losing Warren, the love of his life he had driven from that life.

There were fresh flowers on the grave, and Raphael was sure they were from Warren. He had noticed similar bouquets in the past but just assumed they had been placed there by former classmates or teachers, or even Peggy. Now he realized that Warren had been a regular visitor to Jason’s grave. Raphael would have known that if he hadn’t been so enveloped by his own grief that he didn’t even consider how other people might have felt.

A rush of shame washed over him, and the thought of Warren crying alone by Jason’s grave almost broke his heart all over again. Not that he thought he had much of a heart left after everything he’d been through.

How could I let myself get to this point? Me, the famous and successful architect. Am I really such a miserable, egotistical prick?

Raphael felt lousy. He sat down by the grave and started talking to Jason, the way he had done every day since the funeral, apologizing for not being able to provide more comfort to his son at the time of his death, leaving him to face the darkness with no hope but that of a book and the brutal truth of the finality of our time on earth.

“I wish I had lied to you,” he said. “I mean, would it have hurt you if I had told you about an afterlife or rebirth instead of leaving you hanging by the thread of a children’s story? I’m sorry, son, if I let you die alone, with no hope. I’m sorry for not doing more to keep you alive, make you feel better, get you better treatment, third, fourth and fifth opinions.”

Raphael knew, of course, that there had been no hope. Although rare, Jason’s systemic failure was not unheard of, and no physician could’ve done anything to help him. He had been weakened too much by the transplant and the cancer.

Yet isn’t hope the last thing that abandons us? Isn’t that the one thing that faith is built upon? Hope? Hope that no matter how miserable we are, it will get better, if not in this life then in the next? Raphael had robbed Jason of that very hope, and for that he deserved to suffer, or so he felt, still, almost a year after Jason’s passing.

WHEW THIS IS SUCH A GOOD BOOK, I HOPE YOU GET IT FRIENDS! THANKS FOR LOOKING AT THE OPERA HOUSE WITH ME, SEE YOU NEXT TIME!
